Abstract the aim of this thesis is to assess international donors attempts to use aid to promote peace in sri lanka international donors have on several occasions made it clear that they will apply peace conditionality in order to propel the peace process forward. Sri lanka more than ever before needs international engagement that is critical and sustained focusing above all on immediate human rights and humanitarian concerns but with a longer term political view that seeks to renew a peace process taking into account the full complexity of the conflict. Conditionality can be used throughout all stages of the conflict peace making peacebuilding and peace process implementation cycle the aid used in peace conditionality can employ a range of incentives economic political and security and typically employs a mix of persuasion support and pressure. Peace processes incentives sanctions and conditionality should be 1 crafted and exercised as components of an overarching peace process support strategy 2 calibrated to the conflict parties motives and responsive to societal forces in favour of conflict resolution 3 designed and implemented in ways that help build momentum in a peace .
